Peixotto, Benjamin Franklin
- Peixotto, Benjamin Franklin
(1834-90)
American lawyer, diplomat and communal leader, grandson of Moses Levy Maduro Peixotto. He was born in New York, and became a clothing merchant in Cleveland, Ohio. He was Grand Sar (president) of B'nai B'rith in 1863-4. In 1866 he moved to New York to practise law. In 1870 he was appointed the first US consul in Bucharest, where he argued for Jews to be allowed to emigrate to the US. He was US consul in Lyons from 1877 to 1885.
